This TED video illustrates teaching our kids to be entrepreneurs instead of teaching them to be employees. Cameron Herold struggled and cheated his way through school like I did. He had me in tears with his passionate stories about how he, like so many kids, are done a disservice by putting them all in the box of being an employee or a professional. Don’t get me wrong, that works for a lot of people . For us ‘square pegs trying to fit into a round hole’, it becomes a life sentence for ‘quiet desperation.’
I struggled through school, and later the few jobs I had, trying to do it the ‘right way’. Then I discovered my entrepreneurial spirit and have been successful working outside the employment model. Many of the men I help are men who struggle with trying to fit in, or work, in a system that doesn’t support them. These men think that the problem lies with them – NO it lies with our systems of education and employment. Today we have a great opportunity. We need to foster kids to be self employed. We need to support people to learn and work in ways that support them, not the culture.
Whatever you do, DON’T MEDICATE! Herold is right on with his pleas not to suppress ADD, dyslexia, Asperger’s Syndrome. Fortunately I was never given any meds. I not only learned how to use my special traits, I also learned to heal the aspects that were limiting. Men, please start looking out the box, if not for yourself for your kids. Don’t suppress – express!
Watch this video. If a child of yours or you fits the description Herold gives – get out of the box as quickly as you can. Teach your child and yourself how to be an entrepreneur. It could be most powerful thing you do for your child or yourself. There are many resources available. I have a friend, Michael Van Osch who assists men and women learning to work for themselves.
