As men we need a purpose. Retired cosmetics executive Mark Goldsmith found his through helping some 1,500 young men incarcerated at Rikers Prison in N.Y.C. NPR did a story on how Goldsmith travels to Rikers to teach men how to not return. These not only don’t know how to go to a job interview, they don’t have any connections out of prison for jobs.
With the help of Goldsmith’s Getting Out and Staying Out, only about 20 percent of those who go through the program return to prison, compared with nearly 60 percent for Rikers as a whole. Now that is impressive. Here is a man that doesn’t need to work, working at making a difference with men most of us have given up on.
You can hear in Goldsmith’s voice in the interview that he is alive, he enjoys life. There is something about contributing that has you wake up looking forward to your day. I know on my bad days my contributions get me moving. What contribution or what purpose gets you up? How are you making a difference?
